Puppy Classes

"My (and my dog's) favourite hour of the week! We have fun in a safe environment and learn lots at the same time. It has given us a very close bond, i have met new friends and the dog wouldn't be half the dog she is without Jenny's help and guidance!"

Train and Socialise

Puppy is our most popular class. It is a specially designed infant school for puppies during their rapid learning stage of development.

Puppy teaches his lessons against a background of contact with friendly people and (all cute!) puppies of a similar age in a safe environment.

Social Skills

With Dogs

Pups get to play off-lead with each other in a safe and supervised setting.

We're careful with how we allow them to play with each other. We want shy dogs to gain confidence and bolder pups to learn to control themselves. We don't allow simply a "free for all" where dog can pick up bad habits.

It's pretty vital that pups learn to come back to you even if their best pal is RIGHT THERE. So we practise catching them while they're loose and recall while they're loose. We want them to learn to listen to you and welcome your company more than the company of other dogs.

With People

We work the polite greetings of strangers!

Puppy Training

General control

Pay attention and listen to you.

Sit, stand, down positions.

Puppy health check.

"Leave it!"

Not jumping up on people/other dogs.

Recall

Coming back to you in the park straight away and quickly and have the leash attached.

We're not fussed about them sitting straight in front of us, it's the speed of return we're after.

Loose Leash Walking

From the very first step on our dogwalk!

We aren't fussed if they sit straight at heel or not. We do want them to walk without pulling and pay attention to you.

Messaging Support

We can talk online about the particular needs of you, your family/friends, your dog. Get to know you and tailor training to each pup as an individual.

We may also be able to arrange a "Training Bubble" of owners who can talk online and meet up in the real world for social/training. This, of course, depends on enough owners being interested in Bubbles at any given point.

You can sign-up for online well before your pup is ready to come to class, even before you've chosen your new pup. Getting your training in place early gives your pup the very best start and can sort out any worries you may have and can un-confuse - Google just has so much to say, it can be hard to sort through without making new owner confusion worse. We can help.

The Big Brain Bit

The first session is 2 hours where we teach owners, no dogs allowed.

Separate handler training means people are learning about dog behaviour, what to train and how, puppy development without having to worry what their puppy is getting up to at their feet. Dogs get bored while people are learning.

It's best to do The Big Brain Bit at the start of your course, but if circumstances mean you book a course in session 2, you can pick up that session either during or after your puppy's course.

We'll review what you've found out online, make sure your Web Course is working for you.

Play "The Dolphin" Game which improves our timing when training and "The Training Game" which teaches us how to train an animal who doesn't speak English.

And there's time for questions and shares too.

Puppy Class

One hour a week over 4 weeks.

Week 1:

Free play with permission.

General control, pay attention and positions.

Start recall.

Week 2:

Catch out of free play.

General control, puppy body check.

Improve recall.

Week 3:

Recall out of free play.

General control, "Leave it!"

Start loose leash walking/heel.

Week 4:

Review and improve loose leash walking.

Extras

We don't like to leave keen owners to "just get on with it" after a single course. We want to be there before and after Puppy Class too.

Double Puppy

If puppy is young enough to repeat his Puppy Weeks, he can book for two courses at once and there's a discount on the second one.

Owners report how easier it was the second time around and how they feel they learned more due to the repetition and being more familiar with the class environment.

Juniors

Move-on training for puppies.

Taking him to the next level with exercises such as search, stop-on-recall, stays, and much, much more.

We move all the pups on together so they can stay with friends already made and make new ones.

And if you're after a longer term training career with your pup, we have Advanced, Super Advanced and Masterclass classes which can keep his skills up to scratch pretty much life-long!

Locations

Coxlodge Community Association

9 Jubilee Road, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. NE3 3UR

We've been here since the 1990s and are very grateful to the Committee for their continued support of what we do.

There's a small room which is great for puppies and a larger room for adult dogs. There's a big field and a smaller lawn, the small lawn is lovely for pups to have a "sniff about and greet" before class. Plenty of off-road parking. Two minutes from Gosforth High Street, next to the Fire Station on Jubilee Road, it's central and easy to get to.

Ramp access and the doors can be opened wider if required.

Just off Gosforth High Street. It's worth turning up early to make sure your parking is sorted, the surgery has permission sheets for parking, so it's worth asking reception if you can't find a non-resident space.
